BACKGROUNDER
  • Starfleet is facing its own crisis, as a species of refugees are afflicted with a mysterious and incurable illness. Seeing an opportunity to prove Discovery's worth, Michael volunteers the ship for a mission to save the day. The crew would go to the Tikhov, a ship used to archive plant life from around the galaxy. There, they would get seeds from the refugees' planet before bouts of radiation infected everything. Those seeds would allow them to make an antidote and save countless lives"
  • Star Trek: Discovery is filmed at Pinewood Toronto Studios,[144] taking advantage of multiple soundstages at the studio including the largest one in North America
  • The series spent more than CA$257 million (US$202 million) in Ontario, and created more than 4,000 jobs for local crew, in just its first two seasons
  • Visual effects producers were hired to begin work on the series during the initial writing period, with Fuller explaining that they wanted to develop distinct looks for classic Star Trek effects such as digitally-augmented alien species and transporter beams.[66] Pixomondo is the primary visual effects vendor for the series,[159] with other vendors including Spin VFX,[160] Ghost VFX, Mackevision, Crafty ApesDNEGThe Mill, and FX3X, as well as visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman's in-house team at CBS Studios.[161] Visual effects shots for each episode on Discovery typically take eight-to-ten months to complete,[106] and include fully digital environments such as the shuttle bay of Discovery,[96][162] digital extensions of sets,[161] shots of the Discovery and other starships,[139] digital creatures,[163] holograms,[161] and 32nd century technology such as programmable matter".
